Thought for the Week - We're Back.... and the Tickler File
Wow! It's been so long since I've chatted with you.
We've had lots of fun changes going on lately, and it's
time to share some of them with you.
First, some great new organizing resources for
you.
Do you use a Tickler File? For those of you who
are paper-based instead of electronic-based, you will
love a tickler system. Basically it gives you a way to
"tickle" your memory and remind yourself of upcoming
events and a place to store all that paper you need
later or papers that need a decision later.
A tickler file consists of 43 hanging file folders. The
first 31 are numbered 1-31 for the 31 days in a month.
The other 12 are labeled January through December.
(Those of you who own the Organized Writer ebook have
pre-made labels in the Hanging File Folder section of
the planner or
you can get it here).
Then you file paper in the correct day or month to
remind you.
For example, suppose you have tickets to an upcoming
concert on June 15th. Where do you normally keep them so
you can find them back? With the tickler system, you put
them in the folder marked 15.
Or let's say you want to follow up with an editor in
November regarding a query. Drop a note into the
November folder with all the details and then when
November rolls around, you'll have a reminder.
The most important part of a tickler file is that you
must check it daily -- otherwise you won't be able to
rely on it to remind you of the important stuff. Just
add "Check Tickler File" to your daily routine.
If you'd like to know more about the Tickler File
concept, one of my favorite organizing gurus, David
Allen, has put together a comprehensive report available
for free at
The author recommends the following files in addition to
your tickler file:
- File for stuff to discuss with your spouse
- File for your boss (or as a writer, an editor you work
with frequently)
- A separate file for each meeting you attend on a
regular basis
- Casual Reading
- Waiting on Response
- Purchases/Errands
- Someday/Maybe
- Gift Ideas
- Tax Receipts
- Blank Paper
- Blank Follow Up Forms
The Follow Up Form is a great way to keep track of
people or editors you need to contact later. You
can use this form in the Tickler file described above.
Third, this newsletter is going to
a monthly edition instead of a weekly. The site may not
be completely updated for awhile but I wanted to let you
know.

"Julie, I am sending a quick note to thank you for your well measured and extra-ordinary website. You have
a tremendous amount of information at a very reasonable cost. I subscribed to your free site and, for the
first time in forty years of writing, found a planner that works for me.
I felt so guilty for receiving so much information free from your
site that I have now ordered and downloaded the e book. I have found that you have struck a cord among so
many writers regarding procrastination and simple organization. Keep up the good work.
