Writer-Reminders
Week of Jun 3, 2002
- $130 office...delivered to your door
Volume 1, Issue 23
|
The weekly ezine with a road map for
sidetracked writers.
"Be better writers today
than we were yesterday."
Welcome to our new subscribers and thank you to my
old friends!
Do you have your own office for your writing? Even if it's
just
part of a closet, try to set up your own "writespace."
You will
be amazed at how much more you accomplish because your
stuff is all in one place.
I have one and love it for keeping me organized and
inspired. See Saturday's tips for getting your office
delivered to your door cheaply.
This week's tips are heavy on my personal experiences. If
you are
swamped, read the tips and skip the stories. :-)
Happy writing,
Julie

P.S. I need your help. What do you like about this
newsletter?
How does it help you? I'm getting ready to heavily promote
Writer-Reminders and would like to know what you like (or
don't
like). Just reply to this message with your thoughts.
THANKS SO
MUCH!

CREATE A WRITER'S PLANNER
|
You'll love this new product -- tabbed sheet protectors. Imagine
a sheet protector with an index/divider slot on the edge. You
can add them to your planner and make a write on-wipe off
checklist, and it will be tabbed.
See Quill.com's item number 901-74161 or
http://www06.quillcorp.com/Catalog/Browse/SKU.asp?SuperCategoryID=2&BCFlag=False\
&PageType=1&SKU=023692
They are also available at OfficeMax.com.

WHAT WORKS FOR YOU
|
TIP: When you are really swamped, use a Daily Hit List.
When your regular To Do List gets longer than your arm :-), use a
Daily Hit List. The night before, grab an index card or brightly
colored post-it note and list the five things you HAVE to get
done tomorrow and any calls you have to make (you can always add
more when you finish these).
Be sure to keep your regular to do list/project lists going for
all the other items you think of during the day.
This has been a lifesaver for me this week. Do you ever have one
of those weeks where you have so many new thoughts and ideas you
can't even keep up? I kept overestimating how much time I had
available. By limiting myself to five things, I didn't get
overwhelmed (and I still have my other lists to track all the
ideas).

TIME
|
TIP: If you keep getting sidetracked, see if a week of getting
enough sleep every night helps.
Between the baby and working this week, I haven't slept enough
and noticed I am SO much more distracted. Does a lack
of sleep affect you, or is it just me?

GOALS? WHO ME?
|
If you are a fan of personal coach Cheryl Richardson (she's been
on Oprah, and wrote Take Time for Your Life and Life Makeovers),
she has a new project on the Oxygen network called "The Life
Makeover Project with Cheryl Richardson."
During the five episodes, seven people guided by Cheryl
participated in a desert retreat to identify the changes they
wanted to make in their lives, the obstacles holding them back,
and the tools they needed to move forward.
I've missed the regular episodes, but all five shows will air
during The Life Makeover Project Marathon on Sunday 6/2 from 2-7
PM EST on the Oxygen channel. Cheryl also has a web version for
viewers with downloadable tools at
http://www.oxygen.com/cherylrichardson/

ASSIGN YOUR ACTIVITIES/POWER OF ROUTINES
|
TIP: Create a writing routine with the support of your spouse.
Do you have a regular time when you write? Or do you just
squeeze it in whenever? Try to set up a regular routine that
your spouse supports.
Here's my story: our mornings have always been crazy. I would
be trying to take a shower, and my husband needed to leave for
work (but someone had to watch the kids). Everyone was crabby.
So a few weeks ago, we created a detailed routine for the morning
(arise at 5:45, my shower, his shower, etc.). Life has been so
much smoother and happier because we both know what to expect.
My revelation: having a regular schedule with your spouse/partner
eliminates much of the friction and nagging about when things get
done. Try this for your writing time and see if it is easier.

YOUR "WRITESPACE"
|
TIP: Use sales, coupons, free delivery AND credit card
discounts
to set up your office from OfficeMax.com and OfficeDepot.com.
Check out OfficeMax.com and OfficeDepot.com if you are setting up
your office. I created my workspace with the following items:
OfficeMax.com:
Chair $80
OfficeDepot.com:
8 ft folding table $43
2-Tabletop sort-a-file 23
Rolling filing cart 30
----
Subtotal 176
Less coupons/discounts ( 46)
Total $130
You may also want a chair mat.
The best part: if you live in their delivery area and spend over
$50, they will deliver your stuff directly to your door.
To save extra money, watch the flyers in the Sunday papers for
sales (or check their ads online).
Then visit UltimateCoupons.com to find discounts:
http://webbuyingguide.com/coupons/officemax_coupons.htm
http://webbuyingguide.com/coupons/officedepot_coupons.htm
Finally, check with your credit card to see if they have
relationships with online stores. My card has a 3% discount with
OfficeMax.com, as long as I start the order at my credit card's
site and click through to OfficeMax to get the discount.

WHAT'S IN THOSE FILE DRAWERS?
|
TIP: Make it easy to file! Put your filing cabinet right next
to your desk. Use color folders. Premake your labels. Filing
isn't fun, but at least make it easy.
My story: I hated to pick up my stuff as a child and frustrated
my born-organized mother to no end. She thought I didn't like
things neat. I do, but I won't work hard to get it that way. If
I have to move three boxes to put something in the box way on the
back of the shelf, I won't. I set it down to put away "later."
To keep myself organized, I have to make it as easy to put away
as it is to dump it on the table. So I use a premade filing
system that lets me stuff and run.
